Iv designed a few rough male characters and I have chosen which one Im really happy with and like and I am currently working on the model sheet for the character.
Here are the few rough designs:
Again with this character I also want it to be less 'cartoony' because it just doesn't look right to me and I don't feel happy with that style, so sticking to the style I wanted to do to begin with. Also keeping in mind that its based around sometime in the 50's so I had to research the fashion and style of the clothes the men wore around that time and I loved the idea of the braces, shirt and tie, your typical sort of 50's business man.
This is just a quick colour palette I have made for the female character when she is in her army clothes, I will make a more professional one than this soon.
I chose which design for the final female character I was happy with and liked the most and I then created a model sheet for the female character when shes in the army:
When it comes to making my final film, pretty much all the shots and scenes iv planned out and the characters will be zoomed in on, mostly on the top half of their body or face, which will then make it easier for me to add more detail with the colours on the face for example, unlike on this model sheet where because they are smaller it makes it harder to do more detail and see more detail.
These are some designs I came up with for the Female Character, going back to the way I wanted to design my character in the first place.
I decided I wanted a less 'cartoony' type character. I wanted the colours of the character to give a lot of detail, and also whilst looking at comic/graphic novels, I noticed that the characters are very square, and are drawn with mostly straight lines like this:
With the style I want and the way I want to use the colours, this is what Im looking to go for:
This is a piece of unfinished artwork that iv been working on thats nothing to do with this project but just to show how I want to use the colours, I may make my character a little less detailed than this with the colours because there is a set time for me to get this done but this is the direction I want to go with my character in terms of colours.
Here are a couple more character designs I have come up with for the female character but again my lecturer Caroline did not like these, so Im going back to the more stylized drawing I use to do because thats the way I wanted my characters to be like in the first place, but with so much research and inspiration you can tend to go off track and with different people telling you different things, im just going to stick to what I planned to do in the first place.
I first started with the shape of n hour glass:
I then drew a basic outline over the top:
Drew the main outline over the top:
And then coloured it in, and done the same for when she changes to go into the Army:
This is my thumbnail storyboard I have roughly done, so I know what will be happening in each scene and each shot. I'm now in the middle of creating a rough storyboard from which people should hopefully be able to tell whats happening in that one, along with the script, description of whats happening and dialogue if any.
One of the things my lecturer told me to look at for character design is 'Tank Girl'. This is very much the style i am looking for.
Another thing I thought of when thinking about character design was the character for Gorillaz, I was thinking of looking at this style more so for the male and zombie characters.
These are some character designs I have sketched up.
This is another character design of mine, I just wanted to quickly look at the colours I may use and shading etc.
Im still not happy with the design of the face though.
Wonder Woman
This one image really stood out to me. Seeing Wonder Woman, this strong female character being carried by a man is so different from what you usually see of Wonder Woman.
This particular issue was created after the creator William Marston died , and the message of pro female got dropped. The story become more about her relationship with her boyfriend who was trying to get her to retire so she would marry him and cook and clean for him.
Jennifer Blood 'Jennifer Blood' is a comic by Garth Ennis about a woman who cooks and cleans etc, a house wife and mum by day and by night a ruthless vigilante. This image on the cover of one of the comics rally sticks out to me because you have this woman, in a apron, in pink, the perfect image of a house wife, but then she is holding some kind of weapon, showing shes not just a weak house wife, but shes strong too. The image makes you want to find out who she really is.
I love the art work in this comic by Andriano Batista, its the style that I want to do for my final film, the characters and the backgrounds.
Brothers In Arms
This is a comic (which is also a video game) that I came across to do with war, that really caught my attention most with its use of colours and how each image is created with mostly one colour but different shades. The artwork is by David Fabbri, I love the style and thats the direction I want to go in.
Dust Wars
Dust wars is another comic that caught my eye, with its images, the artwork, which is also done by David Fabbri. I really like this guy's artwork, the characters and the backgrounds. The character on the front cover stood out to me a lot because its an image of what appears to be this really strong female, in what looks like army gear, but again wearing a piece of clothing that is pink to maybe show her feminine side.
Waltz with Bashir
Waltz with Bashir is an animated documentary film by Ari Folman about his experience as a soldier and memories in the Lebanon War. I love the artwork and the animation in this! The characters are very comic book like and I love the backgrounds. This animation has inspired me in terms of backgrounds and how I can make my characters more simplistic but still strong.
Here are just a few strong female characters that I have looked at for this project, and a lot that i have grown up with, watching the shows or films, reading the comics or playing the games.
This is a very rough storyboard I have come up with. I have moved on from the superhero storyline now and moved onto the Army idea, but keeping the same sort of message that I wanted to give originally which is basically that women can do the same things men can do, they can be just as strong as men and showing equality between the two.
At first we see the female in the kitchen, cooking and and the boyfriend/husband is just sat there, being lazy, asking her to get him a drink. They then sit at the table eating dinner that she has made, talking about her going in the army and him saying that he thinks its no place for a woman, she should be home cooking and cleaning etc. The next we see of the woman is when shes in the army training, shes then in some kind of desert land, fighting etc and the screen then fades to black.
The next thing we see is someone knocking the door of the couples house, you see its the woman that is knocking the door, her boyfriend/husband answers it and you see he has cooked, cleaned, and he has preapred a meal for them, that is waiting on the table.
I always had the idea of my female character going into the army in the back of my mind, and I seen these adverts on TV a couple of days ago and these inspired me to work on this idea more.
